President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met to discuss a proposal for what they described as an "entire new neighborhood" in the city, as housing costs continue to climb.
While speaking to the press after the meeting, the leaders shared that their discussion focused on improving affordability for New Yorkers. The plan, still in its early stages, would involve building a large-scale residential development on underused land. Neither side offered specific details about the location or the number of homes that could be built.
The meeting comes as rents and home prices in the city remain near record highs, pushing many families to look for housing far from their jobs and communities. Mamdani has made affordability a central focus of his administration, while Trump has repeatedly pointed to the cost of living as a national concern.
Both leaders called the conversation productive and said further talks would follow. It remains unclear how the project would be funded or which agencies would oversee construction. Housing advocates welcomed the attention to the issue but said any plan must include units for low and middle income residents, not just market rate apartments.
